Lakeport Plantation Presents Lakeport Legacies – The Life and Wives of James Worthington Mason

Refreshments & Conversations:  5:30 pm           Program:  6:00 pm

Come out to The Lakeport Plantation, an antebellum plantation house museum near Lake Village, Arkansas for Lakeport Legacies, a monthly history talk focusing on history in the Delta. This month’s speaker is Dr. Blake Wintory with Lakeport Plantation.  He will explore James Worthington Mason (1841-1874), a former slave turned Reconstruction politician, emerged as Chicot County’s “political boss” in the 1870s. Few, if any, Chicot County slaves had the advantages of Mason in the antebellum era: the son of the county’s wealthiest planter, Elisha Worthington, he and his sister were educated in the North and James continued his studies in France. While historians are aware of Mason’s important political career, little has been made of his personal life. The wives he chose and what became of his two daughters is a fascinating window into four African American women’s lives. Emerging from slavery and freedom, their lives extended to Lincoln’s White House to the American West, Liberia, Paris and London.  Please RSVP to this free event by calling 870.265.6031 or by e-mailing lakeport.ar@gmail.com. Lakeport Plantation is located at 601 Hwy 142 (just over the bridge), Lake Village, Arkansas. For more information call 870.265.6031 or visit http://lakeport.astate.edu.

Nicholas Bustamante Gallery Opening at Malkin Gallery/E.E. Bass, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm—UPDATED TIME

Come out to the Nicholas Bustamante Gallery Opening at Malkin Gallery in E.E. Bass.  Sponsored by Billy & Lisa Percy.  This display is free and open to the public until June 17.  Nicholas Bustamante currently lives and works in Ruston Louisiana, where he teaches as an associate professor of art at Louisiana Tech University.  He was born in Los Angeles California.  In 2000 he received his bachelor of art degree from Humboldt State University in Arcata California.  He then went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree from Long Beach State University in Long Beach California in 2003. The work explores ideas of home, shelter and the way we create personal space.  The storytelling aspects of the pieces are meant to be nonlinear to allow the viewer to complete the story using their own personal histories. “I often take road trips throughout the country in search of abandoned homes and structures.  I am drawn to spaces and items that hold within them the evidence of time.  Structures that at one time functioned, but now are broken down to mere shadows of what they once had been.  I use these structures as a stage to recreate a narrative history for these places.  I consider this body of work to be a contemporary extension of the rich tradition of narrative painting.”

Keep Greenville Beautiful Committee Announce a Change in the Community Cardboard & Paper Recycling Program

Keep Greenville Beautiful announces a change in the community cardboard and paper recycling program.  The paper mills who receive our cardboard are requiring the paper to be baled separately from the cardboard.  We will use the large green community roll-off containers located at Kmart, Greenville Mall, and the Farmer’s Market for cardboard collection only.  We have placed smaller containers alongside the roll-offs for paper collection.  Please begin separating your paper and cardboard and deposit each item in the correct container.  We continue to have problems with trash, household garbage, clothing and plastics being placed in the collection containers and alongside the outside containers.  These items are contaminates to our recycled items and can cause rejection of the loads.  Please keep all items other than paper and cardboard out of our community collection bins.  If you see a container full, you can contact:  Kathy Avis 662.316.8422 or Buddy Garrett 662.347.4869.  Thanks to everyone who supports this community recycling program.
